World Alzheimer’s Month: FAQs
World Alzheimer’s Month and World Alzheimer’s Day are observed every year around the world. The annual awareness campaigns are important opportunities to share information and experiences, and advocate for progress in dementia care, research and treatment.
In this blog post, we answer your most frequently asked questions about World Alzheimer’s Month.
What is World Alzheimer’s Month?
World Alzheimer’s Month is an international campaign to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s – the most common cause of dementia in the UK. During the month, dementia organisations publish important research, carry out fundraising campaigns and call for action to end stigma and improve dementia care through a range of events and educational programmes.
When is World Alzheimer’s Month?
World Alzheimer’s Month takes place every September, with World Alzheimer’s Day observed on September 21st. This is the main focal point for the month when activity reaches its peak. The date was chosen to coincide with the 10th anniversary of Alzheimer’s Disease International’s (ADI) annual conference in 1994, and it’s often when the ADI launches its World Alzheimer Report.
What is the World Alzheimer Report?
Every year, the ADI releases a World Alzheimer Report that focuses on a different topic. Reports contain important global socioeconomic information about dementia, as well as making policy or practical recommendations.
What’s the focus of the 2025 World Alzheimer Report?
This year, the ADI’s report explores the subject of dementia rehabilitation, drawing on bodies of research and case studies from around the world to examine how the concept is implemented and how rehabilitation can be adapted to suit people living with dementia in different contexts.
What is the purpose of World Alzheimer’s Month?
World Alzheimer’s Month brings everyone together in conversation and action: dementia organisations; those living with dementia and their families, friends and carers; researchers and medical professionals; the media, and more. For those involved, World Alzheimer’s Month is a time for honest conversations, raising awareness, sharing advice, and taking part in a range of educational or community fundraising events. It’s also an opportunity to send out clear messages to policymakers that dementia deserves attention and action.
Who can get involved in World Alzheimer’s Month?
Anyone can get involved in World Alzheimer’s Month, whether affected by dementia or not. Many people whose loved ones are living with dementia find strength in community events that bring together others in a similar position to share stories and advice, or provide occupation and activity for those affected by dementia and their caregivers. Others get involved to honour the memory of a loved one, to raise funds for vital research, or to educate themselves about dementia, which now affects one in three people in the UK.
How can I get involved in World Alzheimer’s Month?
There are plenty of ways to participate this World Alzheimer’s Month:
- The ADI has created a range of awareness-raising social media cards, posters and infographics to display online or in person at events or in community locations.
- Use the hashtags #AskAboutDementia #AskAboutAlzheimers on social media to help change perceptions and normalise asking questions about dementia.
- Join or host a fundraising event to drum up support for a dementia charity and increase awareness of Alzheimer’s.
- Share your experiences with Dementia UK to offer reassurance to others who may be in the same position.
